5 Weeks

“NO THAT BED GOES IN THE OTHER BEDROOM!!” I yelled at the movers as they were bringing my furniture inside my new condo. For the past few weeks things between Trey and I have been going extremely well. The bond that we have was constantly growing. When we’re at work, we text and call all day joking, and most days he will just pop up during his break just to take me out to get ice cream or just to talk about what foolery goes on at the bar.

For our first date, a few days after I spent the night with him, he took me out to Kevin Hart’s comedy show, we had dinner at Rodizio’s Grill, and I ended up spending the night at his place. After and hour and a half, the movers had brought all of the furniture inside. The only thing left to do was unload the boxes and place everything where they needed to go.

“You sure you got it from here?” Trey asked me as he prepared to leave. He had to go into work since there is a NBA Finals game going on between the Spurs and the Heat, which means all the men who are not at the game will be getting drunk and eating wings while watching the game. A major payday for his business.

“Casey and I got it from here. Go ahead, we’ll be fine.” I assured him as I walked him to the door.

“Call me if you need anything. I’ll be back later to check on you ok?”

“Ok. I’ll see you later.” I said before giving him a goodbye kiss, and closed the door as he walked away.

I headed back to the living room sitting next to Casey on the couch as we continued unloading boxes.

“Yall are just too damn cute!” she nudged my arm. “I think I’m jealous.” she playfully pouted.

“What?! Yeah right get out of here with that.” I laughed.

“Ok, not jealous but damn Chris ass sure as hell could take some major notes from Trey, the brotha knows how to treat a woman.” she said as I nodded in agreement. “I should’ve introduced you two a long time ago, but the both of yall were taken. I did get pissed when he told me about too. I was ready to beat a bitch ass cause of what she did to him.

“Yeah he told me about that bullshit. How could she do that to him? To use him for his money and yet you fucking off with his own cousin? Get pregnant by the nigga and try to pass if off as Trey’s and when he found out about the shit you get beat up by the cousin, BUT LIE, and tell the police Trey did it so he can get charged with domestic violence?? Girl, I told him if I ever see her ass, dont be surprised if my fist land in her face.” I laughed.

“I told him the same thing! Like he was hurt for a long ass time over that shit. He did everything for someone who never deserved it. That bitch did him wrong. But I can see how the two of you need each other after all the bullshit the both of you have been through.” she said as I nodded in agreement.

“Look, I found this picture of you, mom, and I in that box.” she said handing me the photo of us on the beach two weeks before she died, as she continued. “I remember like it was yesterday when we were little, she took us out on that beach and we made sand castles together and stuck our feet in the ocean for the first time.”

“We stayed on the beach watching the sunset that night and rise that morning. It was so beautiful.” I recalled.

“You know, the night after you told me about the days the two of you spent together while in your coma, and how she told you to tell me that she loved me…I cried myself to sleep. The next morning when I woke up…I saw her standing over me, smiling. And then she said “I love you Casey, I thought it would be better if you heard it from me.” I love you too was all I could say and she slowly faded away. Can you believe she’s still here with us, watching and protecting us just as if she was physically here?” she sniffed as soft happy tears rolled down both of our faces.

“Yeah, I can believe it. She said she would always be with us. And she’s done just that.” I smiled.

I paused Two Can Play That Game and slowly pulled myself up off the couch. I’ve never been so tired in my damn life.
